Vincenzo Foppa, Ritratto di Giovanni Francesco Brivio, Museo Poldi Pezzoli di Milano

On Monday, November 7, 2022, at 6:00 PM, the Museo Poldi Pezzoli will host a conference titled “La cassa mia particolare” by Gian Giacomo Poldi Pezzoli at the Fondazione Brivio Sforza in Milan, curated by Alessandro Brivio Sforza and Alessandra Squizzato. The presentation focused on the so-called “Libretto dei conti” by Gian Giacomo Poldi Pezzoli, discovered in 2011 among the documentary materials of the Fondazione Brivio Sforza in Milan. The main purchases of the collector were examined, and some dynamics of the art market in Milan around the central decades of the 19th century were reconstructed. During the conference, Poldi Pezzoli’s relationships with connoisseurs such as Morelli and Bertini and with both well-known and lesser-known antiquarians (Baslini, Gabrielli, De Amici, la Vedova Arrigoni) will be analyzed. The register of income and expenses of the renowned collector represents a valuable source not only for exploring the provenance of the pieces acquired by Poldi, but also for understanding the economic history of the era, providing an insight into the careful management of the savings and expenses of the museum’s founder. Finally, particular focus was given to one of the works mentioned in the document: the Portrait of Gianfrancesco Brivio by Vincenzo Foppa, now housed in the Museo Poldi Pezzoli but originally from the Brivio Sforza family’s historic collection.
